Clemson vs. Oklahoma Orange Bowl recap, score, and what's next for the Tigers and Sooners.
December 31, 2015Orange Bowl recap, score and key stats for the Tigers and Sooners.
Prediction: Oklahoma 44, Clemson 37, Line: Oklahoma -3.5, o/u: 66
And You Care Because … Clemson ran all over Oklahoma with Wayne Gallman scoring twice in the second half and Hunter Renfrow catching a 35-yard touchdown pass as part of a run of 21 unanswered second half points. Oklahoma held a 17-16 halftime lead on a one-yard Samaje Perine run, and a late 11-yard touchdown catch from Mark Andrews. The Sooners appeared to have the momentum late in the first on a Zack Sanchez interception at the goal line to snuff out the sure scoring drive, but it was all Clemson and the ground game out of the locker room.
Greg Huegek hit three field goals for the Tigers in the first half as Clemson kept marching, but couldn’t close out long drives with touchdowns. Oklahoma had its chances, but couldn’t move the ball consistently enough. In the second half, Joe Mixon was knocked out of the game, and Perine was hurt – Baker Mayfield couldn’t get the offense back on the board with two key interceptions in the second half.
What Else?
– Clemson QB Deshaun Watson completed 16-of-31 passes for 187 yards and a score with a pick, and ran 24 times for 145 yards and a touchdown.
– Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield completed 26-of-41 passes for 311 yards and a score with two interceptions, and was held to -15 rushing yards.
– Clemson RB Wayne Gallman ran 26 times for 150 yards and two scores.
– Rushing Yards: Clemson 312 yards and three scores – Oklahoma 67 yards and a score.
– Oklahoma RB Samaje Perine ran 15 times for 58 yards and a score.
– Total Yards: Clemson 530 – Oklahoma 378
Game Rating: B-. It was a great first half, but Oklahoma didn’t have it in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a coronation – the Sooners just didn’t have anything left in the bag, and the run defense couldn’t slow down Wayne Gallman or Deshaun Watson.
