Clemson football spring practice is here. Take in the storylines that matter, what’s the big deal, what to worry about, and what’s all set.

After reaching the national title game, Clemson readying for next step …

Last season was a breakthrough campaign for Clemson, who came within a touchdown of winning its first national championship since 1981. Even with the 45-40 loss to Alabama on Jan. 11, the 2015 Tigers may have been the most talented squad in school history.

From that group, some key players, namely quarterback Deshaun Watson, return. And some, namely Shaq Lawson, need to be replaced due to the NFL Draft taking a particularly big bite out of the defense. It’ll be a busy offseason for Dabo Swinney, who must get the next wave of Clemson blue-chippers ready for action, while keeping the vets motivated for the climb back up the mountain.

No One Is Worried About …

The passing game. Watson is back for his junior year, so the offense will again be potent. Plus, the receiving corps will be as dangerous as ever. Artavis Scott could use 2016 as a launching pad to the pros, and Jordan Leggett is one of the game’s best tight ends. Even better, Mike Williams is returning from a season-long injury, and Hunter Renfrow and Deon Cain will be even better as sophomores.

Extra Attention Must Be Given To …

The defensive backfield. A strength last season has become an area of concern for the staff. Three all-stars, cornerback Mackensie Alexander and safeties Jayron Kearse and T.J. Green, hightailed it for the draft. Senior cornerback Cordrea Tankersley provides a nice foundation, but others will need to step up this spring.
