    Why You Need To Care

Two of the American’s premier teams meet at the Liberty Bowl Thursday night with a chance to showcase their high-powered offenses to a national audience. Memphis, which won a share of the league crown in 2014, is right back atop the leaderboard again after three games. The Tigers are 3-0, with a flashy win over Bowling Green in the rear view mirror. Cincinnati, though, has been a slight disappointment in September. The preseason league favorite has already fallen to Temple, and needed to rally to beat Miami University last Saturday.

    Why Cincinnati Will Win

So much for the Bearcats hinges on the health of QB Gunner Kiel, who had his bell rung last week. If Kiel gets the green light, Cincinnati has the offensive firepower to run with Memphis. He’s surrounded by a wealth of talented playmakers, including three backs that have rushed for 200 yards and six players with 100 receiving yards. And the retooled Tiger D is coming off a game in which it allowed 579 yards to Bowling Green.

    Why Memphis Will Win

The Tiger offense is humming right now behind QB Paxton Lynch. Memphis is averaging 54 points a game, and like Cincy, the team is spreading the ball around. And while the Tigers have yet to face a quality defense, it’s not as if the Bearcats are the Buckeyes. Cincinnati, which is struggling mightily to stop the run, just gave up 448 yards and four touchdown passes to a weak Miami U. offense.

    Player Who Matters

After watching the film, Memphis will most definitely want to run the ball right at the interior of the Cincinnati defense. Sam Craft and Doroland Dorceus are both capable runners, so fresh legs won’t be a problem. And a little ball-control will keep the rock out of the hands of Kiel or redshirt freshman Hayden Moore, who looked a little lost coming off the bench last week.

    What’s Going To Happen?

As Memphis rolls, it’s amassing confidence and momentum. And that’s bad news for a Cincinnati team playing poorly and unsure about the health of its quarterback. With a rare chance to play in front of a wider lens, the Tigers are eager to make a statement. And they’ll achieve it by roughing up the one-time favorite in the American.
