Alabama has added former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke to Nick Saban’s staff as an offensive analyst.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts will begin his sophomore season as one of the players expected to compete for the Heisman Trophy. He will now have someone working with him who knows a little thing or two about claiming college football’s most prized individual award: Chris Weinke.

Weinke, the 2000 Heisman Trophy winner while playing quarterback at Florida State, has joined the Crimson Tide coaching staff as an offensive analyst, per the Tuscaloosa News.

Weinke had served as the quarterback coach for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams the past two seasons under head coach Jeff Fisher. Previously he was the Director of Football at the IMG Academy, a program that produces top prospects annually, including current Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough and highly-touted incoming freshman linebacker Dylan Moses.

In January, Weinke reportedly met with Tennessee and head coach Butch Jones about a position on the Volunteers staff.

Working with Hurts, Weinke, who had a seven-year career in the NFL, will be able to make the sophomore star even more dangerous as a passer. In his freshman season, Hurts threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns to just nine interceptions while completing 62.8% of his passes. A dual-threat quarterback, he also rushed for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

After the departures of Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian after the 2016 season, the Crimson Tide hired New England Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll as their new offensive coordinator.
