January 20, 2017Florida defensive line coach Chris Rumph will remain with the Gators despite earning interest from Clemson.
The Florida defensive line has been a force the past two seasons, helping the Gators become one of the top units in the country. Behind that has been defensive line coach Chris Rumph, who has decided to stay in Gainesville despite interest from Clemson.
The reigning national champion Tigers, where Rumph was an assistant from 2006-10, are trying to replace Dan Brooks and Marion Hobby. Brooks retired after the season, while Hobby accepted a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an assistant. The duo were the leaders of arguably the best defensive line in the country the past few seasons.
Rumph has been criticized for a lack of landing big-time recruits during his two years in Gainesville, with almost all of his success coming with players that former head coach Will Muschamp and his staff had signed, including key players such as Joey Ivie and Caleb Brantley.
Familiarity with head coach Jim McElwain might have been a factor in keeping Rumph from leaving, as the two were assistants together at Alabama under Nick Saban. Rumph left Alabama to become the assistant head coach for defense for Texas in 2014 under Charlie Strong, only to rejoin McElwain a year later when the latter became Florida’s head coach.
