Chip Kelly discussed a potential return to college after being fired by the San Francisco 49ers.

Now that Chip Kelly has been relieved of his duties as the San Francisco 49ers head coach, attention has turned to his next landing spot. Will Kelly stick to the NFL ranks, should a position present itself, or head back to college? And will he be in the market for a head coaching job, or be willing to swallow his ego and head the coordinator route if needed?

For a man who turned Oregon into a national title contender – recording double-digits wins in every season at Oregon and one championship game berth – and reached the playoffs in the NFL, it’s hard to imagine him taking anything other than a head coaching position.

As for NFL vs. college, Kelly told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports that he’ll “evaluate all jobs individually” and “wouldn’t rule anything out.”

For Kelly to head the college route in 2017, a program would have to make a late move regarding its current head coach as the market has been filled. Feldman reports that “there are a couple of schools contemplating making coaching changes this month” with Kelly now on the market.

Once considered one of the top coaches in the country, Kelly’s image has taken a hit since his departure to the NFL. Issues with upper management and players while with the Philadelphia Eagles, along with a 2-14 record with San Francisco this past season, have diluted his value in the eyes of many in the professional ranks.

That being said, several programs around the country would likely jump at the chance to bring him in given his success at the college level.
