November 6, 2016Chad Kelly is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, which he suffered during Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern.
Quarterback Chad Kelly will miss the remainder of the season, Ole Miss confirmed on Sunday evening. Kelly injured his knee with 9:27 remaining in Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern and left the game, not to return. The school has since announced that the senior signal caller suffered a torn ACL and lateral meniscus.
At the time of his injury, Kelly was 16-for-23 passing for 226 yards and a touchdown. He also had six rushes for 23 yards and two touchdowns. Following the injury, Kelly was replaced by backup Jason Pellerin, who completed only one of five passes for 19 yards and an interception, while rushing four times for 29 yards. Ole Miss scored on two of the three drives Pellerin was at the helm and won the game, 37-27.
This injury news is devastating for both Ole Miss and Kelly himself. For the program, it’s the latest stumble in what has been an unsettled year. From Robert Nkemdiche falling over his hotel balcony prior to the Sugar Bowl, to the NFL Draft drama surrounding Laremy Tunsil, to the continued investigations by the NCAA, to the second-half collapses against FSU and Alabama the program has been snakebitten since December of last year.
For Kelly, this marks the end of what was quite an impressive redemption tale. Bounced from the Clemson program, and the owner of a seemingly terrible attitude, Kelly found a home for himself in Oxford and helped turn his career around. Still braggadocios and prone to the occasional boneheaded move (see: rushing onto the field during his brother’s high school game when a fight broke out), Kelly had quieted enough of the critics with both his play and maturation to warrant serious discussion about being a first-round NFL Draft pick.
Given the recovery time that it takes for an ACL, the quarterback will be relying heavily on his game tape, rehabilitation workouts and the sales pitches of his agents to ensure at least a second-day selection come the draft.
In two years as starting quarterback for the Rebels, Kelly threw for 6,800 yards and 50 touchdowns. He also rushed for 846 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Ole Miss currently sits at 4-5 on the season, and must win two of its remaining three games to reach bowl eligibility. The Rebels next travel to Texas A&M and then Vanderbilt before closing out the season at home against Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.
