February 16, 2017Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly has reportedly not been invited to the NFL Combine due to concerns over his off-the-field issues.
Standout college football players will be traveling to Indianapolis for the 2017 NFL Combine at the end of February to showcase their skills and impress scouts in hope of improving their draft status. One player that won’t be there, however, is Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly.
Per Matt Miller, Kelly did not receive an invitation to the annual combine due to off-the-field issues.
On the field, Kelly was a star for the Rebels as the starting quarterback the last two seasons, throwing for 6,800 yards and 50 touchdowns, on his way to becoming one of the top pro prospects under center.
The problems off the field, though, have raised the eyebrows of NFL teams that see Kelly as a risk.
Starting his career at Clemson, he was dismissed from the Tigers by head coach Dabo Swinney in April 2014 for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Eight months later, he found himself pleading guilty to disorderly conduct after an altercation in a bar where he was accused of punching a bouncer and threatening gun violence. He also got into a tussle with the police while being arrested.
Given a second shot after a year at East Mississippi Community College, it seemed that Kelly’s problems were in the past until being involved in a brawl during a high school game where his brother Casey was quarterback. After Casey had taken a late hit out of bounds, the two sidelines cleared and Chad had to be restrained from getting involved more during the scrum. Kelly, who tore his ACL on November 5 in a game against Georgia Southern, apologized for his actions.
Being left out of the NFL Combine means Kelly will have less time to convince the powers-to-be of NFL teams that he is worth the investment despite his reputation and the recent injury.
