March 2, 2017Former 4-star defensive end Cassius Peat is transferring back to Michigan State. The younger brother of Andrus Peat transferred away from the Spartans for a year to take care of personal issues.
The first time Mark Dantonio’s staff recruited Cassius Peat, it landed the No. 16 defensive end and No. 166 overall player in the country.
Of course, that was when Peat was rated as a 4-star prospect in the 2015 recruiting class. Now, he’ll be signing with the Spartans as a 3-star JUCO defensive end in the 2017 recruiting class.
Being the younger brother of former Stanford star and current New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Andrus Peat is clearly brings its own pressures, but there were other, unspecified personal issues Peat needed to take care of when he transferred to Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona — about two hours away from his hometown of Tempe.
However, he’s expecting to be back in East Lansing for classes this summer and ready for the 2017 season. That’s good news considering the Spartans are preparing for the loss of Malik McDowell to the 2017 NFL Draft.
And as he told 247Sports, thanks to the warm embrace from the Michigan State family, there’s no place Peat would rather be.
“I always felt like I was a part of it even though I went home for a family reason because my coaches kept in contact with me and so did my teammates,” Peat said. “So, I’ve always felt like I was in the program.”
At 6-foot-3, 265 lbs Peat will add a large, athletic force to the middle of the Spartans’ defensive line. He’ll also bring some flexibility to slide down the line to an outside technique, if needed.
That will be a welcomed addition for Michigan State, especially with McDowell gone.
