The 2016 NFL Combine is supposed to be an encouraging time for this year’s crop of prospects looking to improve their draft stock and make an impression on NFL executives and coaches.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the Combine, and he thought Saturday was going to be crucial for his former quarterback, Cardale Jones. Meyer told the NFL Network he thought Saturday “is going to be [Jones’] day. Going to move up in [the] draft today.”

While Jones did line up and clock in with an unofficial 40-yard-dash time of 4.83 seconds, he did take a bit of a hit when he tweaked his hamstring.

The injury kept Jones out the rest of the day from the other tests and drills, and it forced him to sit out from throwing the football, too.

It’s just another, this time unfortunate, misstep on Jones’ path to the draft. Just over a year ago, after helping lead Ohio State to a national championship, Jones contemplated entering the 2015 NFL Draft, and he would have maybe been a first-round pick, too.

But he chose to stay with the Buckeyes for another season, and it’s cost him. He lost the starting job to J.T. Barrett and saw his draft stock fall.

Jones needed to show out in Indy to put NFL executives’ minds at ease about drafting him. He’ll have to make up for the lost day at Ohio State’s pro day on March 11.
