Campus Insiders’ 2017 Tournament Of Uniforms: Final Four

We put the best of the best uniforms in college sports head-to-head in the first ever Campus Insiders uniform tournament.

    March 29, 2017

We put the best of the best uniforms in college sports head-to-head in the first ever Campus Insiders uniform tournament.

Well we started with 64 teams in this tournament, and now we’re down to the Final Four: Pitt (football), Arizona State (baseball), UCLA (basketball), and Notre Dame (hockey). Ironically enough, Notre Dame’s hockey team also made the Frozen Four, which is set to begin next week. Not a bad week for the Irish hockey team.

As our Tournament of Uniforms moves into the Final Four, men’s college basketball is doing the same. And I don’t know about you, but my bracket went up in flames during this past weekend’s games. My final four teams consisted of Duke, Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky, with Kentucky winning it all. I’d wish myself better luck next year, but that’s never worked in the past, so no need to waste my breath.

That’s enough about that though, so let’s get into the important stuff here.

*Note: As the CI #FashionInsider, I will be deciding the winners of each matchup from here on out

Our first multi-sport showdown of the tournament, and it’s a good one: Baseball versus football. You can tell just by looking at the two uniforms present here that this is by no means an easy decision.

Arizona State’s maroon and gold/yellow color combo is sensational. The cursive font on the front of the jersey, with the gold underline, is nothing flashy. Instead, it’s a straightforward, simple, retro-type jersey. And as this tournament has worn on, I’ve become more and more fond of the pullover jerseys in the baseball region.

Pitt comes into the Final Four as our lowest seed of the bunch, so kudos to them for the effort they’ve shown to make it this far. One could argue that the Panthers had the toughest road to the Final Four of any of the remaining teams. After all, college football is home to some of the greatest uniforms in all of sports, so to say that you were voted as having the best football uniform in the nation is by no means a small feat. But could they muster up the energy to pull off another victory to make it to the Final?

#FashionInsider’s Ruling: After a lot of thought and deliberation, I’ve decided to move Arizona State into the final round. The colors used by the Sun Devils separate themselves from the rest of the pack here, as each of the other three teams to make the Final Four use some combination of blue and yellow.

As I already mentioned, the Notre Dame hockey team will be competing in the Frozen Four beginning next week. This is good for all of us as we will get to look at those incredible helmets on national television for at least one game. And in reality, without those helmets the Irish probably aren’t here right now. That’s no knock against the rest of the uniform, but that helmet is what completes the look.

UCLA’s road blue set is easily one of college basketball’s most iconic uniforms. It’s also one of the most attractive. Their blue is a softer, lighter blue than most others that we see in sports, and it perfectly compliments their yellow. The yellow letters and numbers really jump off the blue jersey, which is a sign of something special. The fact that the Bruins have a yellow trim on their jersey and shorts is a key component to their success in this tournament.

#FashionInsider’s Ruling: Hockey sweaters are my favorite “jerseys.” There are so many different designs available when creating a new hockey sweater compared to the available layouts in other sports. However, in this specific instance, I’ve got to give the upper hand to UCLA. They own one of the best looks in all of sports, and that is undeniable.

So there you have it. Arizona State’s baseball uniform and UCLA’s basketball uniform are your two finalists in the inaugural CI Tournament of Uniforms. I’m sure there are many differing opinions out there, and that is to be expected, but this decision is final. I’ve got to admit that when this tournament began, I fully expected our eventual winner to have come out of the Football region. Just goes to show that you can never totally predict the future.
