Cade Mays recruiting profile features the No. 12 player in the CI 25 for 2018. Mays is a do-it-all, powerful offensive lineman and a beast in the trenches.
February 15, 2017Recruiting profile featuring Cade Mays, the No. 12 prospect in the inaugural CI 25 recruiting rankings.
CI 25 Overall Ranking: No. 12
CI 25 Position Ranking: No. 2
Hometown: Knoxville, Tennessee
School: Knoxville Catholic High School
Position: OT
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 295 lbs
Finding a player comparison for Cade Mays isn’t the easiest task. One way to look at him is as another Jermey Parnell. He’s a nasty, driven, pancake-hungry offensive lineman. He projects as a right tackle at the next level.
Mays does an excellent job of winning one-on-one battles early by getting his hands inside and underneath defenders’ chest plates. He’s clearly better in run sets than he is in pass protection, but if he improves as a pass blocker, it’ll be hard to move him inside to guard. He should fit right in with the Volunteers, especially considering he’s a Knoxville native.
“You see that toughness and mean streak on defense, but he carries that over to the offensive line too. He gets after it each play, he loves to put defensive linemen on the ground and he plays with that edge.” – Scout
Status: Committed – Tennessee
Commitment Date: July 13, 2015
Notable Offers: Alabama, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M
This is one of those cases where it would take a lot to sway Mays away from the Vols. As long as Butch Jones is the head coach and his staff remains intact, the talented offensive tackle will stay close to home. Mountains would have to be moved in order to get him out of Knoxville. And even if Jones were to get fired, it would be difficult to pull him away from Tennessee.
Alabama and Florida State could be fallback options in a worst-case scenario for Mays. But Clemson would also get a look. His former teammate, Amari Rodgers, signed with Dabo Swinney’s team in the 2017 class. So, if for some reason the Vols were to lose Mays’ commitment, the Tigers would be ready and waiting to snatch him up.
