BUGA Nation Website, Leonard Fournette’s Family Under LSU Investigation

The BUGA Nation website and Leonard Fournette's family's attachment to it has prompted an LSU investigation into potential NCAA violations.

This week is turning into one to forget for LSU running back Leonard Fournette. Just a few days after his Heisman Trophy campaign — and the Tigers’ national championship aspirations — hit a bump in the road against Alabama, USA Today reports that the university is looking into possible NCAA violations by Fournette’s family.

The issue at hand is a merchandise website. Josh Peters of USA Today provides the following on the investigation.

Bob Barton, an attorney representing LSU, has begun interviewing people involved in a website that was built to sell merchandise emblazoned with “BUGA Nation” — Leonard Fournette’s catchphrase — the person told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday.

While the website, which operated for only 24 hours, did not include Fournette’s name, his likeness was present in “BUGA Nation,” which goes against NCAA rules. The acronym “BUGA” was created by Fournette to stand for “Being United Generates Attitude.”

Fournette’s family manager provided payments for the website’s construction.

Paul Price, described by Fournette’s mother as the family’s manager, made payments of about $10,000 to build a website and produce the merchandise to be sold, the owners of three companies involved told USA TODAY Sports. The owners said they gave Price and the Fournettes more than $20,000 in discounts because they expected strong sales driven by the star running back’s popularity.

Coming off their first loss of the season, Fournette and the Tigers will look to get back on track this Saturday when they host rival Arkansas. Kickoff is set for 6:15 p.m. CT.
