February 26, 2017Oklahoma State has hired Brian VanGorder as a defensive analyst. The longtime defensive coordinator has both college and pro experience.
Brian VanGorder has a new role at a new home in the college game.
After a high-profile dismissal last season from Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame staff, Mike Gundy has hired the former Fighting Irish defensive coordinator as a defensive analyst, according to the Tulsa World.
He is expected to be introduced in Stillwater next week.
The Cowboys added a football mind that has several years of experience at both the college and NFL levels. VanGorder served as DC in South Bend from 2015-2016 after running defenses at Central Michigan (1998-1999), South Carolina (2007) and Auburn (2012), among other college teams. He was also the Atlanta Falcons DC from 2008-2011. After being let go from ND last September after the Irish lost three of their first four games, he worked as a defensive analyst at Georgia.
While analysts can not directly work with players, they can review game tape and preview future opponents. VanGorder will join Bill Clay, who served as the defensive analyst for the Pokes during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The 57-year-old VanGorder, who won the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football at Georgia in 2003, has also coached linebackers at the NFL level and was a head coach at Wayne State (his alma mater) and at Georgia Southern.
Josh Henson was Oklahoma State’s offensive analyst in 2016, but he is now a full-time staff member as the offensive line coach. So Gundy could be considering candidates for the offensive analyst position.
