Each Tuesday, I will reveal my Heisman Trophy ballot if the season ended today — and, thankfully, it does not. Like the official Heisman ballot, I will list my top three in order.

I also will list others who just missed my top three. I will update this each week, and while I won’t reveal my official Heisman ballot in December, I will release it after the Heisman is awarded. The Heisman trust prohibits Heisman voters from disclosing their ballot until after the Heisman ceremony on Dec. 8.

 

My current top three:

1. Will Grier, West Virginia

Grier has led the Mountaineers to a 3-0 start and leads the nation in TD passes per game (4.7). Remarkably, Grier has not thrown fewer than four TD passes in a game this year. Grier also ranks third nationally, averaging 372 yards passing per game.

2. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

It didn’t take long for Tagovailoa to squelch any quarterback controversy storylines in Tuscaloosa, clearly outplaying Jalen Hurts. Tagovailoa is the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman, according to the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook. And until the Tide loses a game, he’ll remain the favorite in Vegas.

3. Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State

Haskins has been nearly flawless so far with 16 touchdown passes — second-best in the nation — and only one interception while averaging nearly 300 yards passing per game. Haskins has an opportunity to make a huge statement in Week 5.

I asked the Heisman trust to expand its ballot to five players to get more players to New York — unfortunately, they said no. But if the ballot included five players, mine would include these two players:

4. Kyler Murray, Oklahoma

So far, Murray has had no issues replacing Baker Mayfield as the Sooners’ QB. Whether Murray remains a legitimate candidate all season long depends on how Oklahoma performs in Big 12 play. So far, so good — even after the loss of running back Rodney Anderson to a season-ending injury.

5. Mason Fine, North Texas

Fine has been, well, Fine for North Texas. The Mean Green are undefeated, including an upset at Arkansas. The 5-foot-11 Fine, who only had one other scholarship offer (Austin Peay) out of Locust Grove High School in Oklahoma, ranks ninth in passing yards per game (332 yards).
