The quarterback competition is on with Braxton Miller sticking around at Ohio State
May 29, 2015Well, good for you, Braxton.
In an era of quarterbacks tucking tail and bolting at the mere specter of competition, Braxton Miller is sticking it out with Ohio State … just like he’s been saying he would for the past six months. And by remaining in Columbus, as Urban Meyer asserted earlier in the day, the stage is set for one of the most remarkable quarterback battles in college football history.
Miller wants to finish his career as a Buckeye. Period. While everyone else pondered how he might look in garnet and gold or any number of SEC jerseys, Miller tuned out the noise, rehabbed his shoulder and prepared to face off with Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett this summer.
Sure, the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year pondered what life might be like in Tuscaloosa or Tallahassee, but not long enough to actually pull the trigger. And if you don’t believe that Meyer will reward that degree of loyalty, somehow or some way this fall, you just don’t know the coach.
Meyer doesn’t need Miller to win a National Championship. That was proven last year. He doesn’t need Miller, but he wants access to him in 2015, because he plans to use him. If Meyer had no use for Miller, he would have encouraged him to transfer, forced him out the door to find reps elsewhere.
Provided the labrum is 100%, there’s a place somewhere in this attack for his unique set—starter, sub packages or even as a utility man to help improve his future at the next level.
A healthy Miller will have a role on this team. And if he can’t return to full strength, entering the unknown world of a new staff, a new playbook and a new supporting cast would have been career suicide.
Braxton Miller isn’t going anywhere. He and his coach tried to tell you that months ago, but it was much more fun to speculate about his potential free agency. Miller didn’t endure multiple surgeries and painstaking rehab to finish this leg of his athletic journey on some unfamiliar campus in front of unfamiliar fans.
The kid from Ohio is staying in Ohio to finish what he started. And there’s nothing about that specific decision that will derail his dreams of returning to the field this season, winning titles or auditioning for pro scouts. Changing zip codes alone wasn’t going to rewrite Miller’s NFL Draft grade … and apparently it wasn’t going to feed his soul either.
