January 15, 2017Three-star kicker Brandon Ruiz decommitted from Alabama on Sunday, leaving the Crimson Tide with 25 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class.
Around this time last year, Nick Saban’s staff lost a recruiting battle for then JUCO kicker Eddy Piñeiro, who ultimately spurned Alabama for the Florida Gators.
Now, it’s 2017, and another kicker has gone against the Tide.
On Sunday, 3-star prospect Brandon Ruiz decommitted from Alabama. The Crimson Tide now have 25 total commits in the cycle but remain at No. 1 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.
Ruiz, who’s from Gilbert, Arizona, released a statement regarding his decision to back off his pledge to Alabama.
“First off, I would like to thank the University of Alabama and the coaching staff for the opportunity to continue my education and football career at their school. I have thought and prayed with my family and we have decided that it will be best for me to decommit at this time. Thank you for everyone’s support in me this far. [sic]”
It appears as though Arizona State is now the favorite to land Ruiz’s commitment and keep him close to home. Ironically, the Sun Devils’ roster will feature former Alabama quarterback Blake Barnett next season.
If he were to pick Arizona State, he’d be tasked with replacing Zane Gonzalez, who holds the NCAA record for field goals made in a career with 96.
As for Alabama, its need for a kicker has seldom been as noticeable as it is now. Senior Adam Griffith, who hit 21-of-28 field goals this past season, is set to graduate.
