If this isn’t a preview of the MAC title game, it’s still going to be fantastic. MAC East leader Bowling Green (7-2) can lock up the East with a win, while Western Michigan (6-3) can take a massive step towards taking the West if it can take home the victory in Kalamazoo.
November 11, 2015If this isn’t a preview of the MAC title game, it’s still going to be fantastic. MAC East leader Bowling Green (7-2) can lock up the East with a win, while Western Michigan (6-3) can take a massive step towards taking the West if it can take home the victory in Kalamazoo. It’s firepower vs. firepower with two outstanding passing attacks coming into the game on fire. The Broncos have won five in a row since losing to Ohio State, while Bowling Green is on a six-game winning streak since giving Memphis a hard time in a 44-41 loss. Granted, it’s partly because teams try to throw to keep up the pace, but the Western Michigan secondary has been way too mediocre. It wasn’t bad against Akron and Kent State offenses that can’t throw, but against just about everyone else it’s been a bomb fest. The secondary has come up with its share of wins with six picks in the last three games, but it’s about to deal with the hottest quarterback in college football. Matt Johnson has thrown for 324 yards or more in every game with 19 touchdown passes in the last four. Even better, on the year he’s thrown 33 touchdown passes with just three picks. Western Michigan isn’t going to slow him down, but …
The Broncos have the offense to more than just keep up the pace. Zach Terrell hasn’t quite been Matt Johnson-good, but he hasn’t been far off with 13 touchdown passes and no picks while hitting over 70% of his passes over the five-game winning streak. WMU has a running game, too, but this game will be all about throwing and throwing and throwing some more. Unlike Bowling Green, WMU is phenomenal at controlling the ball and the clock – it’s hard for Matt Johnson to produce when he’s on the sidelines.
Can there be 800 passing yards and more than 80 combined points? Be very, very disappointed if this isn’t the most entertaining game of the weekend as Johnson and Terrell put on a show. Between its ability to control the clock, and being far stronger and not screwing up on penalties, Western Michigan will come up with a thriller.
Final Score: Western Michigan 45, Bowling Green 42, Line: Bowling Green -3, o/u: 74.5
