Let’s go with the upset here. New Mexico’s pass defense is strong enough to hold Brett Rypien in check (the Lobos allow only 208 yards per game through the air), and they’re a little bit better when it comes to turnover margin. Boise State commits one too many errors and loses a head-scratcher on the road in a weird Friday night game.

Jeremy McNichols is going to run for days on New Mexico. Brett Rypien will find him short over the middle for some “extended handoffs,” and McNichols will gash the Lobos all day. Rypien will spread the ball around and find Thomas Sperbeck for a touchdown. This is Boise State’s game … New Mexico is just playing in it.

The Lobos allowed 641 yards of total offense and 40 first downs at Boise State last year, but they were able to turn a slew of Broncos mistakes into scores and steal a win. New Mexico is averaging nearly 350 yards per game on the ground, but they have had trouble stopping opposing offenses. Bob Davie’s squad will put up some points, but it will give up even more. Broncos running back Jeremy McNichols and quarterback Brett Rypien will have big days as they win by a couple of touchdowns.

Confession: the blue turf and all of its coolness went away for me a long time ago, around the same time that Boise State tried to pretend it belonged with the big boys despite playing 1-2 serious games a year. Sure, they have beaten two Pac-12 teams this season, but those two are Washington State and Oregon State; not exactly a murderer’s row right there. The Broncos will continue to roll over weak competition like New Mexico this week and we will hear how they belong in the College Football Playoff despite no wins against ranked teams. Enough already.
