Former Louisville cornerback Shaq Wiggins is being blocked by Bobby Petrino from transferring to five schools, including Mississippi State.

Shaq Wiggins is looking for a school to spend his final year of eligibility as a graduate transfer after previous stops at Georgia and Louisville. One problem: Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino is blocking him from transferring to some of the programs he is interested in.

Kentucky, Purdue, Notre Dame, Western Kentucky, and Mississippi State have all been scratched by Petrino as possible landing spots for the cornerback. While Kentucky and Purdue make sense – they are on the Cardinals’ 2017 schedule – saying no to Mississippi State could be seen as a personal thing for Petrino. Todd Grantham, who had served as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator from 2014-16, left for the same position on Dan Mullen’s staff this offseason.

Wiggins, who also played for Grantham during his time at Georgia, believes the move by Petrino is a little unreasonable.

“When [Petrino] said Mississippi State, I was like, it had to be deeper than what it seems to be because Louisville doesn’t play Mississippi State,” Wiggins said. “It just so happened to be Mississippi State on there, once Coach Grantham left. I really don’t know what’s his state of thinking or why he chose to put Mississippi State on there. It’s something personal, but I have no idea why. It’s really not fair. It would make sense for Mississippi State to be a part of one of my options.”

Wiggins will be eligible to play immediately due to the NCAA graduate transfer rule.
