November 23, 2016Big Ten football predictions and schedule for every Week 13 game. With a playoff spot likely on the line, Michigan and Ohio State will renew one of sport’s fiercest rivalries this weekend in Columbus.
In 2006, No. 2 Michigan came into Columbus looking to ruin No. 1 Ohio State’s perfect record and clinch a spot in the BCS Championship game. Fast forward 10 years, and once again the Wolverines travel to the Horseshoe looking for a shot to play for a championship. This time it is No. 2 versus No. 3 instead, and neither team is undefeated. Still, when the Big Ten’s biggest rivals meet in The Horseshoe this weekend, they’ll likely be fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
A win for the Wolverines would clinch their spot in the Big Ten title game. If the Buckeyes win, they likely won’t reach Indy due to their loss to Penn State, yet they’d figure to stack up favorably against other playoff contenders given their 11-1 record and four wins over top-15 teams.
The Nittany Lions would find themselves in the Big Ten title game with a win over Michigan State in Happey Valley, and a Michigan loss in Columbus. Penn State hasn’t beaten the Spartans since Joe Paterno was coach, and has lost the last two meetings by a combined 89-26. That said, the Spartans are 1-7 in conference this year while Penn State is undefeated in Beaver Stadium this season.
The other spot in the Big Ten title game is Wisconsin’s to lose, as they need only win at home against Minnesota to clinch the Big Ten West for the fourth time in six years. The Badgers are currently on a 12-game win streak against their western neighbors, and haven’t lost control of Paul Bunyan’s Axe since Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber led the Golden Gophers to a 37-34 win in 2003.
