Big 12 Football Rankings And Reactions, Week 9

Week 9 Big 12 rankings and reactions: Oklahoma rolled, TCU rocked, and Oklahoma State and Texas Tech played a classic.

    September 26, 2016

Big 12 Player of the Week

TCU QB Trevone Boykin completed 23-of-47 passes for 388 yards and three scores, and ran 11 times for a team-high 84 yards and a touchdown in the win over West Virginia.

Big 12 Football Rankings: Week 9

    1. TCU (8-0)

W, West Virginia, 40-10: It’s all humming. Not only is the offense in high gear, but the defense appears to be finding its groove after all the injuries and all the drama. However, now come the big tests with road games at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma wrapped around the Kansas free space, but the Baylor game is at home. Who can the Horned Frogs lose to? All things considered in terms of schedules, it all depends on how all the other big Big 12 games shake out. Best guess? TCU can probably lose to Oklahoma and be okay.
    Best Guess Final Record: 11-1

    2. Baylor (7-0)

UP NEXT: at Kansas State: The Jarrett Stidham era starts now, but more than that, Baylor actually has to start playing someone better than Texas Tech. Actually, Kansas State isn’t better than the Red Raiders, but after that comes Oklahoma, at Oklahoma State, at TCU and against Texas. The Bears can afford one loss and still get to the playoff, but it all depends on how the rest of the crazy November shakes out.
    Best Guess Final Record: 10-2

    3. Oklahoma (7-1)

W, at Kansas, 62-7: The Sooners have gone on a massive roll since the Texas loss scoring 55 on Kansas State, 63 on Texas Tech, and 62 on Kansas as everything is starting to hum. This is the offense everyone envisioned, and now it has to keep everything rolling with Iowa State up next before the three-week showdown at Baylor, against TCU, and at Oklahoma State to close out. Unfortunately, with that loss to the Longhorns, the Sooners have to be perfect.
    Best Guess Final Record: 10-2

    4. Oklahoma State (8-0)

W, at Texas Tech, 70-53: It might not have been football for the defensive purists, but Oklahoma State showed the offense could open it up full throttle. With 128 points over the last two weeks, it’s been a ton of fun on the field in the face of a horrible tragedy. Now comes the chance to show just how good the team really is. TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma – welcome to Stillwater. Can home field advantage be enough to get through this clean, along with a road game at Iowa State? It’s not going to be easy, but win two of those three home dates, and the Cowboys might be the One True Champion.
    Best Guess Final Record: 10-2

    5. Texas Tech (5-4)

L, Oklahoma State 70-53: The defense can’t tackle worth a lick, and it’s been ugly allowing 133 points over the last two games, but the four losses on the year have come to TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State – the same four teams West Virginia has lost to, and now the showdown to be, possibly, in the upper half, next week. Even with the defensive problems, Tech should be able to get to six wins even with West Virginia and Texas on the road and Kansas State at home.
    Best Guess Final Record: 6-6

    6. West Virginia (3-4)

L, at TCU, 40-10: Yeah, West Virginia is on a four-game losing streak, and yeah, the defense is getting ripped to shreds, but the four defeats have come against Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU on the road and against an unbeaten Oklahoma State at home – that’s not that bad. Now comes the shot at being fifth in the Big 12 pecking order with Texas Tech coming to Morgantown. The Mountaineers have to win three of their final five against the Red Raiders, Texas and Iowa State at home, and Kansas and Kansas State on the road – they’ll do it without a problem.
    Best Guess Final Record: 7-5

    7. Iowa State (3-5)

W, Texas, 24-0: All of a sudden, it might be time to look at Iowa State a bit differently. The Cyclones lost to Iowa, Toledo, TCU and Baylor, and all are unbeaten. The 66-31 loss to Texas Tech is ugly, but that wasn’t too awful considering what the Red Raider offense can do, especially at home. After pitching a gem against the Longhorns, can the Cyclones come up with three wins in their final four games to go bowling? Nah, not with three of the last four games on the road going to Oklahoma, Kansas State and West Virginia, and facing Oklahoma State at home. But this win sure was needed.
    Best Guess Final Record: 3-9

    8. Texas (3-5)

L, at Iowa State 24-0: Really, Texas? After such a terrific performance against Kansas State, to come up with that kind of a lemon was stunning. That was one of the wins the team needed to make up for early losses against strong teams, and now it’s going to be really, really tough to go bowling. The Longhorns have to win three of their last four games, and with Kansas one, it’ll take two of the last three games to do it with road games at West Virginia and Baylor wrapped around a date with Texas Tech. See you in 2016.
    Best Guess Final Record: 5-7

    9. Kansas State (3-4)

UP NEXT: Baylor: Okay, Kansas State. On a four-game losing streak, this could go into the tank in a real hurry with Baylor up next on Thursday night and a road game at Texas Tech to follow. With Iowa State and Kansas still on the schedule, and with a home game against West Virginia to finish things off, there’s a good chance to get three more wins, but it’s not going to be easy. It might come down to that home date with the Mountaineers to go bowling.
    Best Guess Final Record: 6-6

    10. Kansas (0-8)

L, Oklahoma 62-7: It’s getting worse. It’s not like the Jayhawks were going to beat Oklahoma State or Oklahoma, but not they’re on a run of seven straight games losing by double-digits. However, they do have losses to Memphis, Baylor and Oklahoma State – all are unbeaten, along with Oklahoma. Up next, road games at Texas and TCU, before finishing up at home against West Virginia and Kansas State. All that matters is if the young players improve.
    Best Guess Final Record: 0-12
