The No. 17 Baylor Bears will take on the No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels in Orlando Dec. 29 for the Russell Athletic Bowl.

The Bears (9-3, 6-3 Big 12) are appearing in their sixth consecutive bowl games and 22nd in school history. Baylor had College Football Playoff aspirations after starting 8-0, but injuries derailed those hopes as the Bears dropped three of their final four, including a 23-17 shocker to Texas last time out. The Bears were blanked in the first half, 20-0, but scored 17 straight to open up the second and make things interesting before ultimately falling short. After third-stringer Chris Johnson went down, the offense was left in the hands of Lynx Hawthorne, a junior receiver. Hawthorne ran for a score, but struggled through the air going 10-for-22 for 64 yards and throwing two picks. With an inexperienced quarterback manning the offense, Johnny Jefferson carried the Bears offense with 23 rushes for 158 yards and a touchdown. Baylor is looking for its first bowl win since 2012, when the Bears beat the UCLA Bruins, 49-26, in the Holiday Bowl.

The Tar Heels (11-2, 8-0 ACC) are making their third straight appearance in a bowl game and their 32nd in program history. UNC had a magical 2015 regular season, winning 11 straight games until losing to Clemson in the ACC title game a few weeks back. It was a game that the Tigers controlled from start to finish, but the Tar Heels hung around as a late touchdown brought them within a possession. A controversial onside kick put the ball back in Clemson’s hands which ended the game. Marquise Williams performed admirably in his first conference title game, amassing 305 total yards and four touchdowns, but Heisman finalist Deshaun Watson was a little bit better. Watson recorded 420 total yards and five touchdowns. UNC will be looking for its first postseason victory since the 2013 Belk Bowl, when the Heels downed the Cincinnati Bearcats, 39-17.

The 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl will mark the first ever matchup between Baylor and UNC.

Considering where the bar was set just a month ago, can Baylor really be focused and energized for this game? Unlikely. UNC, on the other hand, views the Russell Athletic Bowl as a statement opportunity. And it’ll operate accordingly. Both teams will move the ball freely, partaking in a spread attack clinic. But Johnson will not outplay Williams, and a couple of his turnovers in the second half will provide the Tar Heels with the edge they need for a while – and then the Baylor offense will kick it back in. The Bears will crank up the passing game to a whole other level in one of the best shootouts of the bowl season.
