Auburn football recruiting update as of Dec. 30, 2015. The Tigers are trying to retool after going through a transition year.
December 30, 2015It was supposed to be match made in heaven. Pairing Gus Malzahn’s offensive schematics with Will Muschamp’s defensive fury and recruiting tactics … it was designed to be an elite combination.
And, sure, it started out great. Auburn landed the nation’s No. 1 recruit from the 2015 class, Byron Cowart, but he doesn’t seem too pleased with his decision right now.
Muschamp is gone. He’s now the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, and he took Travaris Robinson with him to serve as the defensive coordinator.
Now the Tigers have hired LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to the same position — or so they thought. After ESPN’s Chris Low reported Auburn was hiring Steele to the same position, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported that LSU believed it would be retaining its defensive coordinator.
The coaching staff is a little bit of a mess right now, but at least the Tigers are doing well on the recruiting trail. A week before Christmas, Auburn picked up a commitment from 4-star recruit Antwuan Jackson, the No. 8 defensive tackle in the country, according to 247Sports.
Jackson was the first ranked recruit to commit to Auburn in almost a month after 3-star defensive end Nick Coe pledged to join the Tigers on Nov. 28. Auburn also picked up a commitment from unranked dual-threat quarterback Joey Gatewood on Dec. 5.
January is going to be big for Auburn football recruiting. The Tigers will try to close strong with a slew of top athletes scheduled to visit campus.
