Four-star cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. has narrowed down his recruitment and will announce his commitment on Thursday. The Campus Insiders staff gave its predictions on whether the nation’s No. 31 cornerback will choose Florida State or Miami.

The time has come for one of the state of Florida’s elite defensive backs to decide where he wants to spend his collegiate career.

On Sunday, 4-star recruit Asante Samuel Jr., the son of former UCF Knight and NFL star Asante Samuel, announced his intention to decide between ACC and in-state rivals Florida State and Miami when he commits this Thursday.

Samuel, the No. 31 cornerback in the country and No. 8 cornerback in the Sunshine State, named the Seminoles as his leader on Feb. 28, nearly two weeks after visiting Coral Gables.

This past weekend, Samuel took an unofficial visit to Tallahassee, and it appears FSU is still the favorite heading into his upcoming decision.

The Campus Insiders staff got together to predict where Samuel will commit.

This one screams Florida State all the way. Miami has had the hot hand on the recruiting trail during the past couple of months, but the Seminoles aren’t going to lose out here. Samuel named the ‘Noles as his leader two months ago, and all signs are pointing toward him going to Tallahassee. FSU has made its own claim for the DBU title with guys like Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James being the latest stars to come out of its secondary, and that will play a factor in Samuel’s decision. He’ll have the luxury of being teamed up with Stanford Samuels III, and Florida State will have a deadly duo to shut down receivers for the next few years.

There is a lot to like about both Florida State and Miami right now. Miami has the nation’s top recruiting class, and Florida State sits at No. 8. Both teams figure to be competitive in the ACC for quite awhile. Despite Samuel being from South Florida, I don’t think he slips away from FSU here. He has already labeled Florida State as his leading team, and the Seminoles are turning into, or already have become, one of college football’s top programs for DBs. They consistently send their defensive backs to the NFL. Add all of that to the fact Florida State is a perennial national title contender, and it gets harder and harder to see Samuel going anywhere else.

Jimbo Fisher or Mark Richt? The U or the Tomahawk Chop? Tallahassee or South Beach? Samuel has some pretty good options to choose from here, but in the end, it will be the FSU fans celebrating his announcement. While Richt is building something at his alma mater, FSU is primed to compete for the national title now and for the immediate future. That’s hard to pass up someone looking to leave a legacy.

When the St. Thomas Aquinas star makes his college decision known on Thursday, expect Florida State fans to be elated. The South Florida standout visited FSU this past Saturday, and it only affirmed that the Seminoles are the destination of choice over fellow ACC member Miami. The Hurricanes are arguably the hottest program on the recruiting trail right now, but FSU’s recent pedigree of having standout defensive backs such as Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James will help Jimbo Fisher and Co. land a pledge from the son of the former NFL standout.

Samuel’s recruitment has been followed intently considering his talent and the fact that his father is a former NFL star. And although some are hanging on Samuel’s decision this Thursday, it won’t come as much of a surprise when he picks Florida State. It will be a bit of blow to Miami, but the Hurricanes already have a stellar recruiting class taking shape. Samuel’s decision to choose FSU will be a major get for coach Jimbo Fisher, whose staff has done a great job of developing NFL defensive backs in recent years.
