Florida Trending Upward For 4-Star RB Asa Martin

Asa Martin's relationship with JaJuan Seider is helping the Florida Gators' chances of landing the 4-star running back talent out of Alabama.

Four-star running back Asa Martin spoke with Campus Insiders regarding where the Florida Gators stand in his recruitment and how his relationship with JaJuan Seider is helping Jim McElwain’s team.

One of the goals Jim McElwain set early on in his tenure with the Gators was to increase their brand awareness in Nick Saban’s backyard. He knew the kind of talent the state of Alabama has to offer based on his own time spent with the Crimson Tide.

The Florida head coach has certainly stayed true to the plan.

The Gators signed three players from Alabama in the 2016 recruiting class: Jeawon Taylor, Jeremiah Moon and Lamical Perine. In this past class, they added Kadarius Toney.

Perine showed flashes as a true freshman running back for Florida in 2016, and now McElwain is trying to land another tailback from the Yellowhammer State to keep his backfield stocked.

Campus Insiders spoke with 4-star prospect Asa Martin, the No. 1-ranked running back in Alabama for 2018, regarding his recruitment. While the Decatur native was sharing his thoughts on another SEC team vying for his commitment, the nation’s No. 14 running back quickly flipped the script and labeled Florida as the team recruiting him the hardest right now.

Martin, who’s also ranked as the No. 205 overall player, has developed solid relationships with everyone on McElwain’s staff. The strongest of them is with new running backs coach JaJuan Seider, whom Martin has been close with for awhile. But Seider’s arrival in Gainesville has only strengthened his interest in Florida.

“Me and coach Seider had a really good relationship prior to him going to UF,” Martin said. “I’ve had a lot of interest in Florida for a long time. I love the tradition of running backs they’ve produced.”

There is a chance Florida could take more than one tailback in its 2018 haul, but the good news for the Gators is Martin wouldn’t mind that.

“Not being the only back in the class wouldn’t bother me at all,” he said. “I love competition.”

In addition to Martin, Seider is also targeting 5-star running back James Cook, the younger brother of former Florida State star Dalvin Cook. Cook was the first to receive a call from Seider after he accepted the position with UF.

The Gators are also paying close attention to 5-star running back Lorenzo Lingard, 4-star running back T.J. Pledger and 3-star running back Chris Curry.
