Art Briles Not On Houston’s Coaching List Per Cougars

Art Briles is not on Houston's coaching list according to the Cougars, contrary to an earlier report stating that he would receive an interview.

The Houston Cougars are not considering former head coach Art Briles as a potential candidate to replace Tom Herman.

Contrary to an earlier report on Saturday, Art Briles is not on Houston’s coaching list and will not receive an interview with the Cougars.

Hunter Yuracheck, Houston’s vice president for athletics, issued the following statement on Saturday afternoon regarding the former Baylor and Cougars head coach.

“Earlier this week Art Briles expressed interest to me regarding the Houston head coach position. After discussion with University of Houston leadership, we developed a list of candidates to be interviewed that did not included Art. At this time, we will have no further comment on potential candidates or timeline.”

“I want to be clear that University leadership was unanimous regarding this decision,” Yuracheck also tweeted.

Briles was fired by the Bears amidst off-the-field scandal that included alleged rape and assault committed by players. An investigation found that university officials, including Briles, failed to take action.

Prior to arriving in Waco, he spent five seasons as Houston’s head coach from 2003-07, where he compiled a 34-28 overall record.

Candidates who will reportedly receive an interview from Houston are Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and former LSU head coach Les Miles.
