UT Martin is coming in on a four-game winning streak with a high-octane offense cranking up 39 points per game. However, the SkyHawks only came up with three points in the opener against Ole Miss in a 76-3 nailbiter. Arkansas needs a break after the four-overtime win over Auburn, and with road games ahead against Ole Miss and LSU, this game can’t require any effort.
There’s just enough danger in the SkyHawk passing game to be annoying. QB Jarod Neal can run a little bit, but he’s been on fire lately bombing away with 420 yards and five scores against Murray State last week and four games this year with four scoring throws or more. This isn’t just some high-flying spread offense that doesn’t care about controlling the game – UTM is excellent at moving the chains and controlling the clock. Considering the Hog secondary allowed 258 yards per game, UTM might be able to stay alive.
To be fair, UTM has improved in a big way since the start of the season, but the one game it played against an FBS team was about as ugly as it gets – Ole Miss did whatever it wanted to. The running game averaged over nine yards per pop with big play after big play, while the defense did give up a thing. Arkansas doesn’t have to get cute here. Line up, blast away, keep blasting away, and by the middle of the second quarter the big pops will come.
After losing Jonathan Williams before the season started, Arkansas needed a second running back to help take the heat off of Alex Collins. freshman Rawleigh Williams III came up with 100 yards against Tennessee, but he didn’t get much work against Alabama or Auburn with Collins doing the heavy lifting against the big boys, and now he’s out for the season with a neck injury in a dangerous and scary situation last week in the win over Auburn. Now the Hogs need a No. 2 man, and that’s what a game like this is for. Kody Walker is trying to get back in the swing of things after suffering an injured hand, but the Hogs need him healthy for the finishing kick. No other back has seen a carry this year, meaning sophomore Denzell Evans might get in a little bit of work.
UTM will throw well enough to be annoying, but the Hogs will throw early, get up big in the second quarter, and start to figure out the running back pecking order after Collins and Walker throughout the second half.
Final Score: Arkansas 48, UT Martin 17, Line: No Line, o/u: No Line
