After being outclassed by Texas A&M, 38-17, Arizona State wants to fix what went wrong in Houston and get back to the business of being a Pac-12 South contender. The Sun Devils will get a couple of timely visits from Cal Poly and New Mexico before league play begins. The Mustangs shocked Montana in the opener on a 49-yard Alex Vega field goal with 4 seconds left.
The Mustangs are a perennially solid Big Sky team coming off a momentum-building thriller. A defense that played well in Week 1 could have success against a Sun Devil O-line that was schooled by A&M Saturday.
Cal Poly had trouble moving the ball on Montana. The Mustangs will be enveloped this week by an attacking Sun Devil D that produced eight stops for loss against Texas A&M. The speed and range of linebackers Christian Sam, Salamo Fiso and Laiu Moeakiola will hem in the Mustangs all night.
This ought to be a good spot for ASU QB Mike Bercovici to capture some rhythm after being tormented by the Aggie bookend of Daeshon Hall and Myles Garrett. With time to set his feet, Bercovici will feed receivers D.J. Foster, Ellis Jefferson and Devin Lucien with on-target lasers.
Yeah, it was a rough start for Arizona State, but not much has changed. The Sun Devils still house enough talent to make a run in the Pac-12. They’ll get back on track at the expense of Cal Poly, using big plays to win going away.
Without further ado, the Arizona State vs. Cal Poly prediction is …
Final Score: Arizona State 49, Cal Poly 10
