Week 16 AP Top 25 Look Ahead

    1. Villanova 24-3

The Wildcats easily hold onto the stop spot with wins over Temple and Butler, but there’s a serious challenge coming on the road at Xavier Wednesday.

    2. Kansas 23-4

The Jayhawks are in cruise control, but a road trip to Baylor and a home game vs. recent giant-killer Texas Tech will keep KU sharp.

    T-3. Oklahoma 21-5

Inconsistency continues to plague the Sooners, who have dropped three of their last five. Games this week vs. Oklahoma State and at Texas will give OU a chance to right the ship.

    T-3. Virginia 21-5

Virginia has a chance to prove some things this week on the road at Miami (Fla.) and at home vs. North Carolina. Need to be playing their best basketball right now.

    5. Xavier 24-3

Huge showdown vs. Villanova will be a measuring stick on how far the Musketeers have come since the 30-point beating in January.

    6. Michigan State 22-5

Nice win over Wisconsin kept the Spartans rolling, and they should stay on the winning track with a road trip to Ohio State and a homer vs. Penn State.

    7. North Carolina 22-5

Roaring blowout over Miami (Fla.) was a great response to the heartbreaker vs. Duke, and now road trips to N.C. State and Virginia will test the Tar Heels more.

    8. Iowa 20-6

Iowa is starting to skid a little bit, and how the Hawkeyes react to a homer vs. Wisconsin and a roadie at Ohio State will say a lot about where this team is headed.

    9. Arizona 22-5

Wildcats have lived under the radar this year, but as the wins keep building, Sean Miller’s team will be moving into the spotlight. Road games at Colorado and Utah will keep testing the ‘Cats.

    10. Maryland 23-5

Michigan win washes away bad loss to Minnesota, but the Terps still find themselves scrambling to get back to the top of the Big Ten standings.

    11. Louisville 21-6

Win over Duke was convincing. The Cards have the chance to keep playing spoiler at Pittsburgh and Miami (Fla.) this week.

    12. Miami (FL) 21-5

Loss to UNC was rough. Was it the start of a trend or just a blip? We’ll find out in home games vs. UVA and Louisville this week.

    13. Oregon 21-6

Week to prep for Oregon State showed. Home games vs. Washington State and Washington will allow the Ducks to get back on track.

    14. West Virginia 20-7

WVU is sliding big-time with losses to Texas and Oklahoma, which makes the Iowa State game Monday night huge.

    15. Duke 20-7

The high of the win over North Carolina is tempered by the loss at Louisville and the loss of cool from Coach K and Grayson Allen. Florida State and Pitt might pay the price.

    16. Kentucky 20-7

Don’t worry about the OT loss to Texas A&M. The Wildcats are just fine, and look for two more wins vs. Alabama and at Vandy this week.

    17. Iowa State 18-7

Defense is disappearing for the Cyclones. Have to crank it back up at West Virginia and vs. Kansas State to calm some nervousness.

    18. Indiana 22-6

Win over Purdue kept IU in the Big Ten driver’s seat, but a trap game at Illinois will see the Illini fired up and looking for revenge.

    19. Baylor 20-7

Beating Iowa State and Texas was big. Knocking off KU Tuesday would be even bigger. Can’t overlook TCU next Saturday.

    20. Purdue 21-7

Nearly pulled off a huge rally at Indiana, but nearly isn’t enough. A week to prep for Maryland will let the Boilers breathe a bit.

    21. Texas A&M 20-7

Huge overtime win against Kentucky could be a springboard and give this program some stability. Can’t overlook Mississippi State at home or Missouri on the road.

    22. Utah 21-7

Have won four of their last six, and the Utes face serious tests at home vs. Arizona State and Arizona.

    23. Notre Dame 18-8

Loss at Georgia Tech is tough to swallow, but the Irish can’t lose focus on the road with Wake Forest and Florida State coming this week.

    24. SMU 22-4

Loss to UConn kept the inconsistency front and center for a team that hasn’t won back-to-back games since January. Road trip to Memphis is a danger.

    25. Texas 17-10

Double-digit loss to Baylor took away the excitement of beating WVU, and Oklahoma awaits at the end of the week. K-State comes first.
