Antrel Rolle discusses how a matchup between 2001 Miami and 2016 Alabama would play out. According to Rolle, who played for the Hurricanes, it wouldn't even be a game.
November 8, 2016Antrel Rolle doesn’t believe that 2016 Alabama would even be able to compete with his 2001 Miami Hurricanes.
Whenever there’s an undefeated team steamrolling through the season, the question has to be asked: How would Team X fare against the 2001 Miami Hurricanes, arguably the best team in college football history? The debate can also be drawn with other teams, such as the 2004 USC Trojans, but the roster of the ’01 Hurricanes is widely considered the most talented ever.
Insert 2016 Alabama, who is unbeaten, No. 1 in the polls and appears to be head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.
Former Miami All-American Antrel Rolle was asked how this year’s Crimson Tide team would fare against his vaunted Hurricanes. Rolle was a freshman in 2001, and was eventually selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was one of 17 players drafted in the first round off of the 2001 team.
“Is that even a question,” Rolle responded with snark during a segment on ESPN. “Hands down. I don’t think it would be a close game.”
“Not taking anything away from Alabama, I think they’re a great great collegiate program. Especially under Saban.”
“We were different animals back then. We were different. We believed in perfection.”
One day Apple/Google/Facebook/IBM/other will invent a way to solve hypothetical sports arguments fans so often engage in. Until then, let the debate begin.
