The wait is finally over for Anthony McFarland’s commitment, and Maryland coach D.J. Durkin certainly believes it was worth it.
McFarland, a 4-star running back from Hyattsville, Maryland, chose the Terps over Miami and Alabama on Friday. He originally planned to announce his commitment Wednesday before posting on Twitter late Tuesday that he was pushing it back.
McFarland held to the timeline on Friday, though, and the decision wasn’t what Miami coach Mark Richt wanted to hear. Richt was in hot pursuit of the tailback, who is ranked No. 6 by Scout.com at his position and the No. 71 player overall in the 2017 class.
Maryland offensive coordinator Walt Bell took to Twitter to express his excitement with McFarland’s:

The Terps are getting running back who consistently breaks tackles to keep the play alive in a combination of strength and agility. McFarland can run inside or out, and once he is able to pick up some breakaway speed, he’ll be breaking plenty of big plays. Catching the ball out of the backfield adds another dimension to his game and keeps him on the field. There’s a bit of a knock on McFarland’s blocking ability, but that’s something that comes with more experience and a college coaching staff helping him with reads.
McFarland’s pledge gives Maryland 29 commitments for the 2017 class ahead of National Signing Day, which is Wednesday, Feb. 1.
