Five-star inside linebacker Anthony Hines is committed to Texas A&M, but he would welcome a visit from new Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman.

On Friday, Kevin Sumlin and his staff landed the cornerstone of their 2017 recruiting class when 5-star prospect Anthony Hines committed to Texas A&M over Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, TCU and UCLA.

Not among those programs, obviously, is Texas. The Longhorns have an offer on the table for the No. 1 inside linebacker and No. 19 overall player in the country. It’s one of the 90 offers Hines has gathered. Ultimately, the Longhorns did not crack Hines’ final list of schools.

However, Tom Herman has now taken over the program, and it hasn’t been completely ruled out that he could flip the Plano, Texas native.

Herman is scheduled to spend an in-home visit with Hines this week in hope of possibly persuading the 5-star linebacker to trade out a future in College Station for one in Austin.

When Hines spoke with 247Sports about the visit, he left the door cracked open for a potential flip to the Longhorns.

“He’s welcome,” Hines said. “I just want to hear a pitch. At a time, Texas was really way up there. He’s a good coach, and I think Texas has a bright future. I met Coach Herman at Ohio State, and he came by the school while he was at Houston. He’s an awesome coach and a cool guy.”

If the stars were to align for a flip to Texas, Hines would be teaming up with some special players on the defensive side of the ball. Not only do the Longhorns have Malik Jefferson returning at linebacker, but they have 4-star defensive ends Lagaryonn Carson and Taquon Graham committed in their 2017 class.

Hines could help form a formidable, scary core for Texas’ future front seven.
