March 3, 2017Notre Dame extended an offer to four-star prospect Andrew Chatfield. The defensive end called the news ‘pretty wild.’
If Notre Dame wants to avoid another 4-8 season like the one it suffered through in 2016, more players like Andrew Chatfield need to be brought into the program.
That’s exactly what head coach Brian Kelly and his working on.
The Class of 2018 American Heritage High School defensive end was able to get an offer from the Fighting Irish, which adds to a list that also includes LSU, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Oregon and many others. But the 6-3, 225-pounder had a little worrying to do before the good news.
“A Notre Dame coach hit me up and said I was close to the offer, but I need to call them,” Chatfield told 247 Sports. “I called the special teams coach, coach Polian, and he gave me the good news. It was pretty wild. This is really big. You’re talking about a team that always competes for national championships and puts people in the league. It’s just a really great school.”
As of now, the Plantation, FL, native has just a single trip scheduled for the upcoming spring, and it’s a visit to South Bend to meet with the Fighting Irish staff. While other visits will likely get added—including a possible trip to Baton Rouge to visit the LSU campus—a trip to Notre Dame is indeed booked.
Chatfield, who competed in Nike’s The Opening football camp in Florida over the weekend, maintains that there is no leader for his services, as he is still in the early stages of his recruitment. But there’s no question that the Notre Dame news is big not only for him but for his family as well.
“I’m trying to see what the education is like there and see where I fit in on the defense,” he said of Notre Dame. “When I told my parents I had the offer, they said we have to get up there for a visit and check it out. They said this is another blessing and one we really need to look at. I just want to get up there and get to know the coaches better.”
With former teammate and fellow defensive end Brian Burns having departed for Florida State as a five-star recruit, Chatfield logged an impressive 24.5 sacks in his junior campaign at American Heritage, which has won three state titles in the past four years. He is teammates with Patrick Surtain, a five-star recruit who is considered to be the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the nation.
