September 27, 2014Considering last year’s loss to South Carolina really didn’t matter – Missouri still won the East and had the puck on its stick with a shot at the national title – it’s not like this was really a redemption moment for Missouri QB Maty Mauk, and for a while, it wasn’t even close.
Mauk only completed 12-of-34 passes against a secondary that got lit up all throughout the first month of the season, but the door was open just a little bit with just over seven minutes to play, and he came through with two big throws to lead the way to a three play scoring drive. And then, when he absolutely had to, he came up with a touch pass on fourth down and sparked the final drive that restarted the Mizzou season and put the team on top of the SEC East standings and in complete control of its own destiny.
This year’s Tiger team doesn’t have the talent of the 2013 version, and it doesn’t have the firepower, but Mauk is a proven gamer. He’s not pretty, and he’s not efficient, and there will be another Indiana to go along with another South Carolina, but no matter how it happened, if your team is down 13 on the road against a top 15 SEC team and you come away with the win, nothing else matters.
