Three-star cornerback Ameer Speed updated his top schools on Wednesday. Making the amended cut are Georgia, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia Tech. Speed also released a brief statement, via social media, regarding his impending college decision.
“Minor change but I will be making my decision from these schools Feb 1st stay tuned #blessed”
Ranked the No. 7 cornerback in the state of Florida and No. 47 overall player at his position in the 2017 class, Speed hails from Jacksonville, Florida. The upcoming month will keep him quite busy performing due diligence.
On Friday, January 13, Speed will take an official visit (OV) to Chapel Hill in order to inspect head coach Larry Fedora’s program. The following weekend he’ll travel north to Athens for an OV with UGA. And then on January 27, Speed will expend his final OV on the Oregon Ducks and new head coach Willie Taggart.
As for Michigan State and Virginia Tech, they received official visits last year. Speed was in East Lansing on the weekend of October 28 to watch Sparty take on the Michigan Wolverines. He visited Blacksburg right before the recruiting dead period on December 10.
While ACC Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech is considered the clubhouse leader, Oregon is an intriguing prospect. The Ducks offered a scholarship late in the game – December 18 – and there’s a Florida tie from Taggart’s time in Tampa (defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt also has deep Florida ties). With one last crack at the talented defensive back, it’s worth monitoring if Oregon can pry Speed away from the the South.
