Mark Richt’s Hurricanes didn’t come out with a win Thursday night against Virginia Tech, but they did pick up a win on the recruiting trail Saturday night.

Three-star prospect and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida native Amari Carter committed to Miami over Notre Dame.

Carter, the No. 59 safety in the nation and the No. 7 safety in the Sunshine State, told CanesInSight there was no other place that felt as right as Coral Gables did.

“It felt like home,” Carter said on choosing Miami over Notre Dame. “I visited both campuses, and they were both really nice. I prayed about it, and Miami is the best place for me.”

There was more to his decision than staying close to home, though. Carter developed a great relationship with the coaching staff — especially Richt and safeties coach Ephraim Banda.

“Coach Richt and coach Banda have been recruiting me since they’ve been on campus. Their focus isn’t primarily football. They care about their players off the field and prepare them for life outside of football, that’s what caught my attention about them,” Carter said.

With the addition of the 6-foot-2, 180-pound safety, the Hurricanes now have 20 total commits in the 2017 cycle and are still at No. 13 in the recruiting class rankings. With 2,272 total recruiting points, Miami is only 90 points back of No. 12 Florida State and 133 points behind No. 11 Florida.

Carter has a high football IQ and ideal size at the safety position. He’s a physical football player and will find early reps with the ‘Canes next season.
