Avery Johnson has taken another big step toward turning his Alabama basketball program into a legitimate force in the NCAA.

The Crimson Tide have landed a commitment from four-star power forward Alex Reese, a 6-foot-9 prospect out of Pelham High School in Pelham, Alabama. The big man had his fair share of big-name programs to choose from, but ultimately decided that staying closer to home was the better option for him.

“I’m going to Bama,” Reese said. “I think it felt more like home down there with the relationships I have with the coaching staff and I’m building good relationships with the players now too, so it just felt like home.”

Reese is most renowned for his shooting ability. His favorable size and length allow him to stretch the floor and make him extremely tough to defend on the perimeter.

But he also provides a tough presence underneath the basket, playing physical defense and tenaciously battling for rebounds. Reese gives his team a lot of second-chance points and opportunities, often finishing with a soft touch around the rim or kicking the ball out to the perimeter through traffic.

Reese noted that a big part of his decision was due to Alabama’s rejuvenation onto the college basketball scene. This program is on the up-and-up, and recruits are taking notice.

“It was actually a big part in my decision,” Reese said. “I think I can go down there and help them win games and turn their program around.”

Along with Alabama, Reese also held offers from the likes of Arizona State, Auburn, Clemson, Cincinnati, Georgia, Kansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Reese is listed as the No. 59 overall recruit and No. 7 power forward in the 2017 class. Joining Reese in Alabama’s 2017 class is small forward Herb Jones, though the Tide are also in the running for five-star prospects Collin Sexton and Troy Brown.
