An off-the-field issue has struck the Alabama football team a little over a month after it lost a last-second College Football Playoff national title game to Clemson.
Crimson Tide offensive lineman Lester Cotton was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia on Friday night, according to Tuscaloosa Police Department (TPD) records.
The rising junior was stopped by the TPD at around 11 p.m. while in his Chevrolet Tahoe. The officer said he smelled marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle. A search of the car revealed an undisclosed amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Cotton was charged, processed and released on bond.
The 6-foot-4, 319-pounder started five games for Nick Saban and the Tide last season. Saban has not yet commented on the arrest, but he will certainly be faced with questions about the latest arrest of a Crimson Tide player. Being such a successful head coach at a high-profile school will always put a program in the hottest of spotlights.
Cotton, who is a Tuscaloosa Central High School product, arrived to Alabama as a four-star recruit in 2015. He started at right guard during his sophomore season in 2016 before Saban shuffled the line. Cotton moved back to right tackle where he backed up freshman Jonah Williams.
