Alabama is deep at the running back position, but Najee Harris’s high school offensive coordinator thinks the freshman can compete for the starting job.

The running back position at Alabama has been one of the major strengths of the Crimson Tide since Nick Saban took over as head coach in 2007.

Mark Ingram. Trent Richardson. Eddie Lacy. T.J. Yeldon. Derrick Henry. All names that SEC opposing defenses will not forget for quite some time.

According to former high school offensive coordinator Brett Dudley, Najee Harris has the chance to become one of the best and will play immediately for the Crimson Tide.

“Najee has the skills to truly be able to push and compete for that starting spot,” Dudley said. “He’s not going to be in a situation where he doesn’t play a lot as a freshman. There’s no way Najee would allow that to happen to himself. Physically and mentally, he’s going to put himself in position to get on the field right away.”

Those are strong words – ones that put a lot of pressure on Harris – considering the fact that both Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough, the two leading rushers at running back, return for Alabama next season. Harris rushed for 1,040 yards and two touchdowns while Scarbrough went for 812 yards and 11 touchdowns.

There’s also Josh Jacobs, who made himself an asset in his freshman season, rushing for 564 yards and four touchdowns.

Harris is an early enrollee and will have the opportunity to make his name during Alabama’s upcoming spring practice. Rated by Scout as the No. 1 overall player in the country in the 2017 recruiting class, he will have his work cut out for him.
