Alabama football recruiting update as the Crimson Tide continues to add to its 2017 class.
March 21, 2016Alabama football recruiting update, as the Crimson Tide continue to add to the 2017 class.
Alabama wasn’t overly active on the recruiting trail this past week, but there were some positive moves made by the Crimson Tide.
Four-star JUCO linebacker Gary Johnson announced he’d be playing in Tuscaloosa, Ala. next fall, making him the seventh commit in the program’s 2017 class.
At 6-foot-1, 225 lbs Johnson has ideal size to play inside linebacker for the Tide. He maintains gap control and attacks running backs at the line of scrimmage without getting washed down by the guards.
He’s a bit stiff in zone coverage, but he makes plays on the ball in the air and can be trusted not to trail a route — i.e. Johnson won’t abandon his zone.
The Tide also extended offers to wide receivers Tyrell Shavers and Jeremiah Holloman.
At 6-foot-5, 205 lbs Shavers is already built to play collegiate football. He’s not terribly quick, but he’s a definite red zone threat due to his size and leaping ability. The route running needs work, and he needs to get better at creating separation off the line of scrimmage.
As for Holloman, he’s built (6-foot-3, 190 lbs) and plays differently than Shavers. Holloman flashes the acceleration to leave defensive backs in his dust once he gets to the third level. His physicality is worth noting, as Holloman embraces contact. He’s an excellence downfield blocker with big-play ability.
Below is an overview of how the Tide’s 2017 recruiting class currently sits.
