Four-star recruit Akial Byers has been committed to Alabama since the summer, but academic issues will force the nation’s No. 13 defensive tackle to take the JUCO route instead.

The 2017 recruiting haul for Alabama is on track to be one of its best during the Nick Saban era. And that’s not even considering the fact the Crimson Tide is still pursuing some blue-chip prospects who have yet to commit.

Names like 5-star wide receiver DeVonta Smith and 5-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon are still in play and could potentially cement Alabama as the No. 1 class yet again. However, the importance of the Tide landing the latter has been multiplied thanks to the latest development with the nation’s No. 13 defensive tackle.

News broke on Monday that 4-star prospect Akial Byers, the nation’s No. 246 overall player, has failed to qualify to enroll at Alabama. According to a press release from Fayetteville High School in Arkansas, Byers will take the JUCO route and enroll at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College instead.

With Byers now out of the picture, the Crimson Tide has dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings with 24 total commits. It’s now the Georgia Bulldogs who sit atop the rankings with 23 total commits.

If Alabama is unable to land Solomon, who could potentially re-join Michigan’s class, Saban’s staff would have to turn its full attention to 4-star defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis. Both LSU and TCU also are in play for country’s No. 8 defensive tackle and No. 95 overall player, but this could be an old-fashioned Tide-Tigers battle.
