    Tennessee Football Recruiting Class Overview

It might not have been the best of the SEC’s best recruiting classes, but it’s more than good enough helped by a huge National Signing Day. This was a good class before, but it became worthy of being among the national elite with a few key recruits led by DE Jonathan Kongbo and S Nigel Warrior. Most of the NSD guys were on the radar before the day started, but Butch Jones was able to lock down his key prospects.

The Class Is Heavy On …

Defensive backs. The Vols did a great job for the defensive front, and it’s always going to get a few star receivers, but the secondary will benefit the most with Nigel Warrior a next-level safety who could’ve gone anywhere, and with corners Tyler Byrd, Marquill Osborne, and Baylen Buchanan all fitting the Tennessee type with good size and outstanding speed.

The Star of the Class Is …

The JUCO transfer defensive linemen. Warrior is the main man in the class – he’s the superstar defensive back with the ability to take this class to another level – but for right now, getting DT Alexis Johnson and DE Jonathan Kongbo from the JUCO ranks is a really big deal. The 6-4, 300-pound Johnson is a prototype interior pass rusher, and the 6-6, 265-pound Kongbo is the devastating pass rusher who could be turned loose right away.

The Team’s Biggest 2016 Depth Chart Hole Is …

Safety. The Vols return deep and loaded with a team good enough to compete for the East, the SEC, and the national championship, but they need to lock down the safeties. Brian Randolph and LaDarrell McNeil are both gone, but the surprising return of corner Cameron Sutton for his senior season, and with start LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin back, the D might be just good enough to overcome the position concerns.
