2016 San Diego State Football Recruiting Class Overview

It’s a big class, both literally and figuratively, with lots of different prospects led by some huge bodies for the offensive front. It’s a class looking to reinforce everything Rocky Long does in terms of the bruising running style and quick defense. The superstar recruits aren’t really there, but it’s a strength-in-numbers class.

The Class Is Heavy On …

Offensive tackle. This coaching staff loves to run the ball and run the ball some more, and this class is loaded with a tremendous mix of good options for the near future with a few JUCO transfers to fill in the blanks now. More than anything else, this is a MASSIVE group of blocker with 6-7, 345-pound Donnell Greene coming in from Coffeyville JC and 6-7, 320-pound Yasir Durant and potential fixture at one of the tackle spots.

The Star of the Class Is …

RB Chase Jasmin, 5-10, 175 – Tight ends Parker Houston and Isiah Macklin were great gets, and at least one of the several offensive tackle prospects should turn into an all-star, but under Rocky Long the running back is the guy. Jasmin is a smallish, quick back who was wanted by Washington, Arizona, Washington State and Nevada, but fits what the Aztecs like to do with his speed and shiftiness. Can he be a workhorse? That’ll be the key.

The Team’s Biggest 2016 Depth Chart Hole Is …

The right side of the offensive line. Just about everything else is in place with RB Donnel Pumphrey returning for another year and with just enough talent returning on defense to keep the fun going after a dominant season. The one key will the right side of the line with guard Darrell Greene and tackle Pearce Slater both gone and just enough backups gone to make the O line a wee bit thin.
