Head coach Gary Andersen proved at Utah State and Wisconsin that he didn’t need superstar talents to crank out productive teams, and that’s sort of his big positive at Oregon State. He’s not going to get the four and five-star guys like UCLA and USC will, but he knows how to make the most of the prospects who fit his system. With a ton of JUCO transfers coming into an already experienced team, this class matters.
Defensive backs. Andersen’s teams need a strong defensive back seven to rock – he’s about defense first – and he’s going after some athletes to bolster the secondary led by Christian Wallace and Shurod Thompson. Landry Payne, Michael Johnson and Emony Robinson are part of the puzzle, with Payne and Johnson two JUCO transfers needing to produce early on.
S Christian Wallace, 6-2, 211 – JUCO transfer Phillip Napoleon should be an early factor at one spot on the defensive line, and Mason Moran needs to eventually be what the Beavers need at quarterback, but it’s Wallace who was the best and most surprising signing in the class with offers from Oklahoma, Texas, TCU as a possible safety of a hybrid linebacker. The Texas native has tremendous size, great speed, and the athleticism to be a Pac-12 standout.
The defensive line. The one silver lining in an otherwise awful 2015 was how the team went through a transitional period. Now the Beavers are experienced with nine starters back on offense and eight return on D. Replacing RB Storm Woods is going to be tough, but that’s about it for the key talent losses other than on the defensive front. Sumner Houston is back to anchor the front three on the nose, but ends Kyle Peko and Lavonte Barnett are gone and more of a rotation has to be developed.
