It’s not the greatest of classes compared to other ACC teams, but it’s hardly a disaster. It’s more of a class for the infrastructure and the lines – especially on the defensive side – but it’s a balanced group. The star power is lacking without any sure-thing next-level prospects coming in, but there’s a nice base of mid-level possibilities. To put it into code, it’s a “recruit to a type” class.
Defensive linemen. The linebackers should be good, and the offense came up with a few terrific guard prospects, but the defensive line got the bulk of help starting with JUCO transfer Desmond Branch to come in and make an impact on the end early on, while Jordan Woods and Chris Martin are two excellent gets with the upside to see time inside or out. The 6-2, 310-pound Brandon Adams, though, is all about the interior.
LB Dedrick Mills, 5-11, 203 – Emanuel Bridges is another great inside linebacker prospect coming in to potentially serve as the running mate for the defensive front seven, but Mills has the bigger upside. Auburn and South Carolina wanted Mills, but he committed relatively early in the process. In a class devoid of sure-thing stars, Mills needs to stand out.
The secondary. Just about everything is in place for an offense that had to undergo some major personnel changes last year, and the defensive front seven should be far stronger based on experience, but the secondary is a huge issue with all four starters gone. Losing SS Jamal Golden and CB D.J. White will be a big problem early on.
