    California Football Recruiting Class Overview

Was Sonny Dykes able to capitalize on the momentum of a good 2015 season? Sort of. It’s a decent class, but considering the high-powered offense the team runs and the NFL prospects it cranked out this year, there weren’t a slew of top-shelf stars signing on. That came more last year, and this year’s class is hardly bad, but it’s not full of sure-thing difference-makers.

The Class Is Heavy On …

Defensive backs. What’s interesting about how Cal recruits is that a few of the defensive backs coming in should become key wide receivers. That happens everywhere, but making the move takes on more importance in the Bear offense. The coaching staff brought in a slew of good receiver prospects, but the secondary is getting the most help – at least before the changes – starting with corners Traveon Beck and Camryn Bynum, and depending on where the positions end up falling, possibly seven defensive backs to help out a struggling pass defense.

The Star of the Class Is …

QB Max Gilliam, 6-2, 185 – He doesn’t quite fit the Dykes quarterback mold, but will he end up being the triggerman and statistical star in the near future? The Bears brought in playmaking prospects in Melquise Stovall and Derrick Clark – ultra-quick players who should shine – but a few years from now Gilliam might be the one working with them. He wasn’t a top recruit – Washington and Utah were the other main suitors – but with his mobility and his legs, he’s a different type of option for Cal.

The Team’s Biggest 2016 Depth Chart Hole Is …

The passing game. The coaching staff knows how to crank up the passing attack, but it’s going to have a ton of work to do losing QB Jared Goff early to the NFL along with WR Kenny Lawler. Also gone from the receiving corps are Trevor Davis, Stephen Anderson and Darius Powe from the air show. Fortunately, the defense returns loaded with veterans.
