This is absolutely insane right now.
When I say it’s a guess, it’s a guess for everyone, including the bowls themselves, as there’s a war going on for the available teams to fill the available slots. ESPN is going to dictate a lot of this, but it’s still going to come down
to geography, best matchups, and what the conferences want.
The biggest key will be the 5-7 teams and where they all get to go. Missouri would’ve been an attractive option, even at 5-7, but it bowed out of the process.
So now, the top options alive in the equation are – in this order, according to
the Academic Progress Report (APR) – are Nebraska, Kansas State (if it loses to
West Virginia), Minnesota, San Jose State, Illinois, Rice.
So
keeping the geographic challenges in mind, and looking at what the bowl people
are going to want to try putting together, here we go …
Monday, January 11, ESPN
University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ
Playoff Winner vs. Playoff Winner
Projection: Oklahoma vs. Alabama
College Football Playoff Semifinal
Thursday, December 31, 4:00 or 8:00 pm ET, ESPN
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
Playoff vs. Playoff
Projection: Alabama vs. Michigan State
This will be the main event on New Year’s Eve. Clemson will beat North Carolina in the ACC championship and take the No. 1 spot and the Orange, Alabama will get the No. 2 position against Michigan State, who’ll rise up to third after beating an unbeaten Iowa. If the Hawkeyes win, they’ll be the No. 2 and Alabama third.
College Football Playoff Semifinal
Thursday, December 31, 4:00 or 8:00 pm ET, ESPN
Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL
Playoff vs. Playoff
Projection: Clemson vs. Oklahoma
Here’s the best guess. Clemson beats North Carolina and takes the No. 1 spot in the final CFP rankings, and Oklahoma ends up No. 4 after Michigan State moves up to No. 3. The committee won’t give Oklahoma the break of the Cotton Bowl and Arlington – it’ll have to make the trip to Miami, old school Big 8 champ style.
